Harriston, ON – February 1, 2024 – The Ontario Bean Growers (OBG) invests in a Professorship in Weed Management based at the Ridgetown campus of the University of Guelph. This funding will support the Huron Research Station and Weed Research for a period of 10 years, ensuring weed research is a priority.
The OBG Professorship in Weed Management will work alongside the Department of Plant Agriculture conducting cutting-edge research in sustainable field crop weed management practices. Funding for this project will help to rebuild and solidify field crop research, training, education, and knowledge transfer. In particular, the Huron Research Station, which operates out of the Ridgetown Campus, is a critically important site for practical, outcome-based field crop research.
Investing in research is one of OBG’s top areas of focus as an organization. Their mission statement is “to advance the production and consumption of dry beans through research, promotions, advocacy, and communication, on behalf of the Ontario’s dry bean growers.
OBG commits to $660,000 in funding to the University over a 10 year period. In addition, OBG and the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) commit to support research conducted by this Professorship for a 10 year period. It is estimated that this research will amount to approximately $840,000 over that period.
