Description

The perfect combination of savoury sausage, hearty beans, and aromatic spices encased in a buttery, flaky puff pastry. These sausage and bean rolls are a mouthwatering treat that will pass as a sophisticated appetizer at a party or an afternoon snack for your kids to dunk in ketchup!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (19oz/540 mL) romano beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 lb (500 g) ground pork
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) paprika
  • ½ tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional: sesame seeds (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, add romano beans; using a fork, roughly mash. Add ground pork, onion, garlic, fennel, paprika, salt and pepper. Using clean hands, mix well until combined. Set aside.

On a lightly floured surface, unfold one sheet of puff pastry; place other sheet in the fridge until ready to use. Cut it in half lengthwise to create two long strips.

Quarter the meat mixture and shape it into a long log that is about 1.5-inches in diameter, down the center of one pastry strip, leaving a 1.5” border on both sides.

Fold one side of the pastry over the filling and press it lightly into the meat. Brush the other edge with egg and fold to meet the other side; gently press the edges together to seal the seam. Using a sharp knife, cut into 4 equal sections and place seam side down on parchment lined baking sheet.

Repeat steps 3-5 with the remaining meat mixture and puff pastry.

Brush tops with egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds immediately, if desired.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy, and the internal temperature of the pork reaches 165°F (71°C).

Remove sausage rolls from oven; allow to cook slightly before serving.

Notes

Freeze uncooked sausage rolls and bake them at a later time. Just make sure to adjust the baking time accordingly if baking from frozen.

Not a fan of fennel? Try using rosemary instead! It will also pair perfectly with the ground pork in this recipe.
